olema means to be. Which one is "they"?

What it is for

  • The verb you'll use in every conversation, and it's irregular
    • Olen natuke kurb.

      I am a little sad.

    • Nad on õde ja vend.

They are a brother and a sister.

  • The owner gets -l, which already says "has". "Is" always follows
    • Mul on oma maja.

      I have my own house.

    • Tal on suur perekond.

      He has a large family.

  • Being sleepy or hungry, or having to do something, works the same way
    • Mul on kange uni.

      I am very sleepy.

    • Tal on hea isu.

      He has a good appetite.

Watch out

You'll reach for a "have" that isn't there. Put -l on the owner, then "is", then the thing. That whole pattern is how Estonian says "I have a car".
